This was an outstandingly successful concert – or at least un succes d'estime. Having been turned over at the last minute by Kingston Parish Church, we were obliged to hold it at the congenial, but less well known, St Andrews Church in Surbiton. The orchestra may have outnumbered the audience, even with three generations of Parikians in attendance (the youngest only in the afternoon rehearsal, but vocal in his comments).

The quality and enthusiasm of the performance was matched by the delight of the audience (although after one of the more, to my mind, comical episodes of the Prokoviev, barely a flicker of a smile rose to the lips of the audience – this was, after all, "classical" music!), and although it deserved an audience ten times the size, we can console ourselves that this was art for art's sake!
